And Beyond Oasis is finished too! Thank god! Damn this game has me tap dancing between loving it and hating it. I love the animation, the story is nonsense. The character design is incredible, sound design is nails on the chalkboard.

The combat is BY FAR my favorite part. imagine a deep beat ‘em up but w/swords. Secret combos, move inputs, different weapons to pick up & try. It’s like streets of rage 2, without grabs & throws. It’s very fun. It starts to fall apart with room sized bosses & tight play forming.

It also has weird little guys to collect!
[Here] is my biggest frustration. “Hey, you like the hook shot from Zelda!? Well you can only use it if you first find a mirror & only if your magic timer didn’t tick down. Oh & hopefully you also don’t want the beefcake fire genie as well.”

BUT it’s worth playing, especially a dual-play experience back2back with Centy. It’s easy to get lost in the well of well known 16bit ARPGs like Link to the Past and Secret of Mana, it’s nice to try some of the lesser known titles on a system that isn’t known for these games.
Thoughts from 2025
To this day I still haven’t found an action RPG with combat quite like Beyond Oasis. If you are curious about how Streets of Rage would feel as an action/adveture game, give this a shot. That sounds design though, still haunts my dreams.
