In 2022 I decided to only play hack and slash games, in whatever order I saw fit to connect any threads I wanted to explore. This is one of the games I played during The Year of the Hack and Slash! I’m porting over this post which originally appeared as a thread on twitter in 2022.

I started another Hack & Slash in the wake of Drakengard 3. I didn’t know what to do next, as I’m not ready for Drakengard 1 or Nier Replicant. I saw a Capcom sale on the switch & grabbed Onimusha: Warlords! You can tell right away this was another proposed Resident Evil game! 🧵

I’m around 1/2way through, and its exactly what I needed. Its not a 7-course tasting menu of emotions, rather a quick bite by a good chef. The combat is tight & it won’t outstay its welcome (around 5hrs). That’s not to say its fluff, because it gets intense with the story.

It has lots of Resident Evil in it. You get weird relics that unlock doors, you’re in this dilapidated Japanese mansion. There are trap puzzle rooms, medallions needed to unlock doors, demons with long tongues. Hell there’s even a room full of tanks that enemies bust out of!

You have been defeated, Evil Samanosuke!

Get wrecked, bro.

Its easy to forget this is a PS2 game thats been uprezed.

So you kill a huge insect queen after a long unskippable cut scene, forget to heal and accidentally trigger another boss battle before saving then die and it all comes back. Yeah, this game is 20 years old.

Back to the boathouse! Yes, I would like to climb the ladder. Yes, I would also like to use this boat. Yes please for the love of god I would like to not have to try to beat this boss 3 more times.

I complain but it wasn’t really that bad. It would have been annoying back then, as much as it was now, but it was not a deal breaker. In fact, after the ending cut-scene of this game, I would say its quirks are absolutely worth putting up with.

And I missed something about the combat! It does get a bit deeper, as there is an entire block, parry and ‘flash’ attack system that I wasn’t privy to. It’s hard to do, but instead of dodging right before an attack, YOU counter attack before getting hit for an issen-strike.

Another game down! If you’re a fan of Samurai and also Resident Evil what are you doing? go play this! It’s also worth it for the bonkers and ultra violent final cut-scene which came out of left field. If you aren’t going to play it look it up and watch it, its awesome.

Another thing re: Onimusha- the music is CRAZY. Apparently they hired the New Japan Philharmonic, cited as up to 200 pieces. So you’ll be standing in this broke-ass mansion, just doing nothing and this incredible score is swelling behind you. It’s amazing
