Yes, I do very much want to play Resident Evil Requiem, but after finishing RE2R, I felt I owed it to ourselves to play through Resident Evil 3. Besides, I’ve seen people calling this a DLC to RE2 so how hard could it be? How long could it actually be? How much more annoying could Nemesis be compared to Mr. X??

title

Right away I can see how this game is trying to differentiate itself from RE2 and even RE1. Nemesis, the bigger badder uglier more annoying cousin of Mr. X has more moves under his leather trench coat and comes busting through the walls of Jill’s apartment in the first few minutes. It’s very surprising when he comes busting through the wall of Jill’s apartment. And they finally gave our character a dodge… sort of. It never moves Jill (or Carlos) in the direction I thought it would, but it’s cool it was included.

Lots of running away in this game! Jill is really being tossed around and beat up a lot. I like that they gave her a grenade thrower and a shotgun. For these big disgusting sewer blobs I could lob a grenade and blast hit them with a shotgun shell and they’d drop.

It was cool going back through RPD as Carlos, seeing the old building in a state that wasn’t quite as fucked as when we walked those halls as Leon and Claire. I can see why people call this a Resident Evil 2 DLC, it’s such a straight continuation of the story of that game. Even though I’ve been more frustrated with this one I’m happy we’re playing it now. With all those pouches Carlos has on he should have twice the storage space.

RE3_002

Nemesis keeps getting more and more annoying to fight. I don’t love being told to run away from an enemy only for the game to turn heel and say “oh no nevermind now you can fight them.” Unless there is some story specific reason for the change it always feels contrived. Though, I did like it when Nemesis showed up with less clothes and a weapon. Nemesis who showed you how to use weapons? Where’d you get those clothes?

I’m in the hospital now and they did a great job with the atmosphere - some of these rooms are absolutely knackered with blood and guts and claw marks everywhere. I learned what caused it, these giant fucking monsters that look like Fallout Deathclaws. I stopped for the night because I have to go into a room with two of those beasts and I don’t think I can handle it tonight. Jill will have to wait for her vaccine just a little while longer.

And just like that, Jill and Carlos fly off into the sunset together! I came back and cleaned up the last few sections of the game. I was not expecting Carlos to have to wage a last stand in the lobby of the hospital while his partner… hacked something? His involvement wasn’t clear. I feel like the differentiation between Carlos and Jill’s sections is what (I think and hear) they are going to do with RE9, but it doesn’t make as much sense to make Jill an ammo deprived, scaredy-cat considering she’s a S.T.A.R.S. member. Her lack of guns was never her problem, in fact by the end of it I had so much ammo, gunpowder and health in my storage that I had a hard time figuring out what to take to the final fight.

RE3_004

The second to last fight with Nemesis was frustrating and I had to attempt it several times, mainly because there is so little feedback when attacking him. I dumped 6 explosive rounds into him and I couldn’t tell if it was even hurting him. Some shaking or stuttering or pausing would go along way to telling me if things were working or if I was just wasting ammo. In the end, my biggest disappointment was that we didn’t exit the building through the giant fucking hole we blasted through with the rail gun, which was absolutely wonderful. Thank god that idiot is dead. Unfortunate for Raccoon City and all the whacky architecture, but I’m glad we won’t need to deal with it again… or will we????

Final Thoughts

In the end, I understand the parroted complaint that RE3R felt like RE2R DLC. I did like seeing the environments and characters and city again from another perspective, and I found it cool that if you wanted to, you could start RE3R, play up to point and then start RE2 and it would feel almost like chapters from the same book. You could keep ping-ponging back and forth between the two games like that because they are so closely related.

There were high-highs in this game, and low-lows. One of my bigger complaints about RE2R was the lack of a dodge or any kind of movement. It wasn’t until the end of the game did I really figure out how to use and get the fabled “perfect dodge.” I actually think coming from RE2R so quickly hurt me because instead of dodging, I had the useless, disposable knife on the brain. Again by the end of the game I was dodging guys and taking heads off but it took may frustrating encounters to get there. While there were some tense moments here and there, the game lacked any real “horror.” Instead feeling more action-oriented with some jump scares tossed in. While this isn’t a complaint that I would put any weight on with, say, Resident Evil 4, it felt more appropriate that this game - which focuses around the constant threat of murder from a giant monster - felt more horrifying. In the end I’m happy we played this right after 2 and I think we’re now ready to start Resident Evil 9: Requiem!
