Yes, I do very much want to play Resident Evil Requiem, but after finishing RE2R, I felt I owed it to ourselves to play through Resident Evil 3. Besides, I’ve seen people calling this a DLC to RE2 so how hard could it be? How long could it actually be? How much more annoying could Nemesis be compared to Mr. X??
Right away I can see how this game is trying to differentiate itself from RE2 and even RE1. Nemesis, the bigger badder uglier more annoying cousin of Mr. X has more moves under his leather trench coat and comes busting through the walls of Jill’s apartment in the first few minutes. It’s very surprising when he comes busting through the wall of Jill’s apartment. And they finally gave our character a dodge… sort of. It never moves Jill (or Carlos) in the direction I thought it would, but it’s cool it was included.
Final Thoughts
In the end, I understand the parroted complaint that RE3R felt like RE2R DLC. I did like seeing the environments and characters and city again from another perspective, and I found it cool that if you wanted to, you could start RE3R, play up to point and then start RE2 and it would feel almost like chapters from the same book. You could keep ping-ponging back and forth between the two games like that because they are so closely related.
There were high-highs in this game, and low-lows. One of my bigger complaints about RE2R was the lack of a dodge or any kind of movement. It wasn’t until the end of the game did I really figure out how to use and get the fabled “perfect dodge.” I actually think coming from RE2R so quickly hurt me because instead of dodging, I had the useless, disposable knife on the brain. Again by the end of the game I was dodging guys and taking heads off but it took may frustrating encounters to get there. While there were some tense moments here and there, the game lacked any real “horror.” Instead feeling more action-oriented with some jump scares tossed in. While this isn’t a complaint that I would put any weight on with, say, Resident Evil 4, it felt more appropriate that this game - which focuses around the constant threat of murder from a giant monster - felt more horrifying. In the end I’m happy we played this right after 2 and I think we’re now ready to start Resident Evil 9: Requiem!
