TODAY… IS A VERY SPECIAL DAY. Today, a new game… a Suda51 game… a brand. new. Suda51 game was released… ROMEO IS A DEAD MAN. WHAT A TITLE! I’m very excited about this, as you may or may not know I think Goichi Suda is one of the most interesting and creative video game designers working today. He makes games that are never ashamed of being video games, they try new things, they make you think but also entertain. He’s great! And today, February 8th we get to try a new work by him and his team at Grasshopper Manufacture.

Hoo boy, I’m excited! I’ve already played through the first part of the game, the introduction section and it’s so goddamned cool. There has been stop motion and miniatures and comic book panels and raw gory action. I love that a main enemy type is called “white devils.” I love that every few minutes the game treats you to a new visual delight. I’m just about finished with chapter 2 and I really fell right into the groove. The combat is great so far, I have two different weapons unlocked. I went with the “gauntlet” style claw weapons as my second unlock but the next thing I want is the heavy, two-handed attack sword.

There are moments that sit and linger like this scene outside the Night Owl diner.

There isn’t a lot I can say about this game because I think you should just play this. It’s a game that is never apologetic about being a game, it never wants to be a movie even though its referential as all get out, and even when its splicing in an animated music video into the middle … it only works because its a game. A game that needs to be experienced by you and taken for what it is… An extremely violent video game.

I’ve finished the game!

I’ve not just finished the game but I’ve upgraded most of the weapons.

I’ve beat most of the time trials.

I’m 4 achievements away from platinum.

I love this crazy goddamn violent video game and I am going to start it over on hard.

I love the soundtrack. I love that every 5 minutes you are treated with a different kind of art or graphics or skeuomorphic interface. It’s an incredible experience and I’m looking forward to going through it again and playing it with a more critical eye.
