CyberBuffalo and Generative AI

I have been reluctant to write one of these thinking that the words I’ve written, analogue photos I’ve taken and posted and graphics created in Affinity would be enough of a statement - I’m not exactly subtle about my distain for generative AI, LLMs, ChatBots and the like. But now having seen The Onion come under fire for a well-done photoshop job - yes that Onion - I figure it’s time to actually put a hard line in the sand and stand up and say

I have not used nor will I use generative AI on this website, in my personal life or for my profession, in any capacity at all, in the past nor will I in the future. Not for writing, not for image creation, not even for code.

I find the entire affair completely unnecessary. Really? You need your phone to summarize a text message for you? What are you fucking stupid that you cannot read what is probably ALREADY A VERY SHORT MESSAGE? You need a summary of that? You cannot write your own grocery list? Perhaps you could do a web-search for “starter grocery lists” and see what real human beings WHO NEED TO EAT have said on the matter. There is an old phrase that I’ve always liked, generally used when talking about creating something that people will use - find a need and fill it. Generative AI fills no need. Much like late-night, made for TV inventions, it’s a repackage of so many other things, creates an imaginary problem, and does a piss-poor job of solving it. I saw a social post the other day that said “You don’t need chatGPT I am perfectly capable of drinking a bottle of water and lying to you.” and I (along with 15 thousand others) felt that. If you need a reason, if somehow you’ve made it to May of 2025 and still were sitting on the fence about generative AI let me say this: it’s built upon the backs of everything that came before it, without consent, without acknowledgment and without attribution. Billions of dollars worth of fake valuation is being handed to a handful of shucksters while they scrape the internet, picking apart the rotting bones of the free-web despite the bandwidth or financial pain they may inflict, without regard for the resources they waste, for the fresh water they hoard and spoil. And again - all for nothing. So don’t use it. Not even for a joke! It’s a destructive force hellbent on creating one thing and one thing only - capital for a ruling class. There is no purpose other than to put hardworking people out of a job. It attacks the very heart of humanity - creation! Don’t let them take away the flavor of life, reject generative AI in your own work! AI IS THE TOOL OF THE ENEMY.
