Tonight I had a little time to myself so I decided to boot up the old switch! It’s been sitting kind of dormant recently, not only have I not been playing games too often, when I am, these days, I’m using the Steam Deck. I was browsing the e-shop when it dawned on me - The Onimusha 2 Remaster released! A game I’ve been interested in after seeing it in the February State of Play. So let’s dive in! (I’ve brought over my thoughts on Onimusha: Warlords from 2022 if curious).

First Hour

Immediately, after the opening cut-scenes you can feel the tonal shift in this game from the first. There are these cute dioramas that introduce the cast of characters that are about to be a major part of this game and they have a goofy air to them. Gone is the creepy mansion slowly unfolding before you like a paper map - now we’re being moved to specific areas. After seeing his village burned to the ground, Jubei is called to a cave and given the gift of absorbing the souls of slain demons, then sent off into the world to find 5 magical orbs. The first stop on this journey is a small mining town full of life, slapstick and whacky characters.

I think this is the biggest change, for me, you now have these funny guys that are hanging around towns and dungeons, sometimes jumping in to fight with you, other times they are around to trade items with. There is this whole mechanic of gift-giving that I’m still trying to figure out - it’s not quite like the Links Awakening trading quest, though someone gave me a piece of chalk and hoped I could turn it into a canteloupe so it feels like maybe we’re building up to something. Sometimes these allies will tell you specifically what they want (“Booze from around the world!” or “I came here to learn”) but other times its more vague (“I want to be entertained!”). I’m really trying to not look up a guide but I’m also nervous that you won’t be able to replace certain items if you trade them, I’m hitting a bit of friction there.

So far the combat has been pretty good, it seems quite simple compared to the first game but again I’m only about an hour in. I found a scroll in a puzzle box that gave me instructions on how to use the “true power” of one of my swords (R + back to forward + Y) so I’m assuming the combat is going to open up and breath. I also have two weapons already, certain weapons unlock specific magical gates so I expect to get more of those. The first boss, this weird spider guy, was a pretty good fight and he knocked me out once, but it was pretty fun. I had an ally with me and he was stunning the boss and then encouraging me to move in and go for the kill. I like the allies so far, it’s an interesting addition to this series.

My last observation is specifically lobbied towards the remaster. By default the aspect ratio is set to 16x9. I thought that it looked pretty good that way. The ratios were all correct and the environments looks nice filling my big TV. Then I got to the mining town and there was a statue you can look at it - its head was cut-off! I switched the aspect ratio and sure enough, turns out they are just zooming in on the 4:3 image and cutting off the top and bottom, as opposed to reformatting everything to fit 16:9 natively. I find that a bit lazy and I don’t like the idea that we’re missing out on anything so I’m going to leave it on 4:3.

Okay I caved - I did a little research on the gift giving system. I was just too curious not too! To my credit, I read through the manual first to see if it gave me any more insight beyond what I already knew and it did not. Here’s as much as I learned before I turned away:

  • The gift system will let you raise your affinity with each of your allies.
  • By raising this affinity you can affect the story and unlock playable chapters for each of the allies.
  • The ending you get will be affected by whomever you have the highest affinity for.
  • There is no way to check your affinity, in-game.

WHEW! I didn’t look at any guides for what characters would like which gift, the game gives you some subtle clues and SO FAR I’ve been able to suss out who wants what based off their personalities. My plan moving forward is to go by gut, give gifts as I see fit, but allow myself to save scum a bit if things go horribly wrong. I’m not going to try to go for a specific ending, instead I’m going to let the chips fall where they may and see what happens! I’m loving the moving character portraits that happen when you give them something, too. It reminds me of the talking characters that jump right up to the front of the screen in those off-brand Link/Zelda CD-i games.

I realize now they are using the mines as a way to help me get money. I’ve gone back in and out of the mines a few times now just to farm some gold and souls. The upgrades demand A LOT of souls in this game and I fear I’m not going to get my equipment upgraded too far. I had wandered into the wrong part of the town and accidentally triggered the next stage of the story, I wasn’t quite done buying stuff from the store, I still had a parrot and some engagement rings left but! I’m not going back. No no no we must continue on!

This area I’m in is like the Lost Wood of Onimusha. There are these straight-aways and you have to whack this fat, poison mosquito a few times for it to pop and infest the area with its hallucinogenic gasses, then - and only then! - the correct path is revealed. Once I got through those corridors I was treated with a cut-scene and a new potential foe, this giant pig woman that looks like the bride of Ganon from the first Legend of Zelda game. It turns out she’s not who I’ll be fighting here, instead I’m going to fight the spider-body guy from the mines and she’ll attack later. There’s lots of banter in this game - the characters love chatting and razzing one another.

One of my problems with a game like this is its ability to get you locked into a section where your choices are:

  1. Go forth, boss bottle and die
  2. Go back for supplies across a gauntlet of guys and die

That was what I was struggling with last night, the boss was kicking my ass so I decided to try my hand with the gauntlet of guys in the forbidden woods. After a few rounds of fighting, I upgraded some equipment, got my health full and moved on with my one heal. That was enough to refocus me and slay the weird spider legged boss!

Tonight I made some good progress! I fought my way through the pig ladies layer, found a mechanical dolphin and soared through the skies and through the ocean like frickin’ Poseidon. I lost a sword fight on the beach but was rescued (again) by Oyu. This turned into a section that was playable by Oyu! I liked her sword and shield mechanics, though it feels like they made her slightly over powered. I like these small sections where you have to puzzle your way through but they aren’t super complicated - it actually makes bite sized game sessions really accessible. Once I was finished with Oyu and found the magical flute that will apparently make fighting demons easier, I regained control of Jubei and headed back into the castle. I revised a few areas and grabbed some collectibles - these were areas I found with Oyu but lacked the tools to access, it’s a fun way to contain the backtracking of a bigger game like Resident Evil or Castlevania.

The next major section I got to was BACK at the castle from the first area, or rather a tower connected to the grounds. When I got to the bottom of that tower a cutscene triggered and I got to play as Ekei! His section was pretty involved. I needed to navigate around a bridge, through the old mansion (where I rescued some collectibles), in a boat and through another section of the boat house. His combat is good, I liked that you get to use the same magic freezing attacks that Ekei uses when helping you in combat. Hes a well rounded fighter but cannot take more than a couple of powerful hits. I finished off the night back at the door Jubei was locked in and transferred over control. I guess that means my affinity with Ekei is pretty high!
